The power of focus

If there is one thing that is clear about deep work, it is that it is a deliberate action that requires practice and mental fortitude to be able to have the discipline that goes along with it. It is the antithesis of not being in control of one’s own mind. Deep work is a practice of mental conditioning in order to achieve the highest quality work you can achieve. It’s not even just something you can use for work or school, but for anything that you feel passionate about such as hobbies like art, music, sports, anything that you put your mind to. Digital distractions divide our attention and while they are beneficial in our lives, they may also hinder us from being in the moment, and that is a crucial aspect of deep work and focus.

The purpose of focusing shouldn’t simply be the outcome, for example working hard towards some monetary gain; rather accepting your tasks and seeing the big picture knowing that you are doing your best should be what you get out of it. An understanding that you are working at your highest level. If the task is something you appreciate such as painting, or creating music, or anything creative in general, having focus and a deep work mentality is something you should take pride in having. It’s a state of mind that you operate in that allows you to create something and bring it to existence so others can experience it as well.

Focusing on deep work requires will and actually wanting to change your work habits. Your ability to adapt is something that will come in play and your work ethic will depend on how you are able to process and adapt. “Deliberate practice is the process of working on your capabilities intentionally, avoiding being lazy and just keeping yourself busy. It is about operating slightly outside your comfort zone, working with feedback to constantly improve your practice and eventually your skills”. (Dimitris Gkiokas)

Focus requires determination, and if you are determined to achieve something, you will find a way to focus on that goal. “Incorporate deep work into your routine. This is easier said than done. To incorporate deep work into your routine, you need very strong willpower. To begin, you need to decide your deep working hours. Once you do, you need a ruthless commitment to follow deep work during the allotted hours”.
